Membership in a genealogical society means you are no longer researching alone. Genealogy is an extremely rewarding hobby, but it's too easy to spend a great deal of time by ourselves, whether it is in front of a computer or trekking to various repositories. By attending society meetings, working on projects together, and collaborating with others on our genealogical problems, we find an entire community of like-minded people. We can share our common passion, keep up with the latest news in the industry, enhance our research skills, and help beginners to discover the joys of the hobby.
If we live in Bucks County, we need to travel a bit to attend an educational seminar or workshop. Forming a local society means we can host our own speakers locally, and provide those educational opportunities for ourselves and for the beginners in our area.
We can also give back to the genealogical community by working toward online access to Bucks County genealogical records, and offering to help others who are researching their Bucks County ancestors from a distance. Most counties in the US have a county-focused genealogical society which works to improve records access for researchers. You can probably think of many examples when someone in another state or country helped you with your research because you couldn't be there in person. As an organization, we can pay it forward. Many hands make light work.
Perhaps the most important benefit of membership in a genealogical society is the connection with others and the lifelong friendships formed.
