| Description | In 1824, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed a law requiring every township to appoint three persons as "schoolmen" to superintend the education of poor children in the township. Each township maintained an annual list of these children. This record source consists of the lists of poor children from 1824 to 1830, and also includes the names of the "schoolmen" appointed in 1824. These records were transcribed by Thomas G. Myers as a volunteer for the Bucks County Historical Society. The transcription was donated to the Bucks County Genealogical Society by Mr. Myers with the kind permission of the Bucks County Historical Society. The original printed transcriptions are available at the Mercer Museum Library of the Bucks County Historical Society. These entries are searchable by the name of the child or the appointed person. |
